One of the main problems I have is that I simply don’t like to sit down in front of the PC and work. I guess it’s the same with all of us, we all prefer to do anything else, something more fun, or sometimes, something more productive (like watching youtube videos).
I struggle every day trying to get things done, and I think that I’ve improved a lot. I think one thing that has helped me a lot is to repeat to myself over and over that the less I wait to start a task, the earlier it’ll get done. As I work from home, it’s very hard to keep an office schedule; so, it’s very common for me to stay at my desk until 10pm or later, just because I haven’t finished all the things I wanted to do for that day. And I don’t like that. Now I try to start tasks as fast as possible and as early as possible, because I have the motivation that by doing so, I might be able to get rid of work by 5pm.
The other thing I’m trying to improve in my work is to minimize distractions, which is very hard. You know, as a web developer, you need to have the browser open all day, and it’s very hard not to go to check your Google Reader, or what’s going on at this or that forum. There’s no solution for that, other than repeating myself that the more distractions I have, the more it’ll take to finish my to-do list. And it works.
Oh, and one more thing…I am a podcast addict. I was subscribe to a lot of them. I decided to reduce my quota of podcasting, and currently I’m only subscribed to four of them. Why? Well, because it listening to less podcasts let’s me keep my focus in my work. I’m the type of person that needs noise to work, but sometimes working quietly is better.
What do you do to stay focused on your job?
