Does GTD really work?

I see it everywhere. Software, books, blogs, all about the GTD (get things done) system. But I wonder, does it really work? Somebody I know said that GTD is out there to create a market for itself, sort of like they created the solution for a problem you didn't know you have (for example, there are a few blogs that've gotten really big and successful, all because they talk about productivity, while reading blogs is one of the worst productivity killers).

While it's true that there's a lot of people out there that want to get things done, and want to organize their lifes and work a bit better, I'm not sure that following a system that somebody else thought of can be successful. What works for a person might not work for anybody else.

I don't think that trying any of those systems is a bad idea, in the end, it can work for you, but I wonder why has GTD become such a big topic for productivity? What did people do (what was the trendy system) before David Allen's GTD?
