Wasting time reading feeds

My google reader trends says:
from your 442 subscriptions, over the last 30 days you read 18,512 items, starred 86 items, shared 0 items, and emailed 0 items.

That's a huge amount of feeds, and that's a lot of read items. I check google reader every single day. I don't know how much time I spend reading feeds, but it has to be a lot.
I feel like if I don't read them, I'm missing something: the latest gadget launch, some cool programming tutorial, news about the latest firefox, nokia device, flash, photoshop, etc. I'm even subscribed to a few productivity blogs like lifehacker.
If I want to have more free time to do things that really matter, then the first step I need to take is to do less things that aren't really important, like checking google reader every single day. Maybe I'll set a goal to refine my blog subscriptions so I read less than 100 a day. What do you think? how do you deal with the overflow of articles from your feed readers?
